AnewmarinefishassemblagefromthelateSmithian(Olenekian,EarlyTriassic)AnasibiritesbedsoftheThaynesFormationcollectednearGeorgetown(BearLakeCounty,south-eastIdaho,USA)comprisesactinopterygians(Saurichthyscf.elongatus,Actinopterygiiindet.),sarcopterygians(Actinistiaindet.),andpossiblychondrichthyans.WereviewtheglobalfossilrecordoftheTriassicloweractinopterygianSaurichthys,whichisusedhereinforacasestudyoftrendsinmorphologicaladaptationsaswellasvariationsinpalaeogeographicdistributionanddiversitydynamicsofEarlyMesozoicfishes.IntheEarlyTriassic,Saurichthysalreadyoccupiedatoppositioninmarinefoodwebs,withsomespeciesachievingbodylengthsofupto1.5m.DistributionofmorphologicalcharactersinSaurichthysduringtheTriassicsuggeststrendstowardsareductioninsquamation,stiffeningofthefinsandaxialskeleton,shorteningofthepostorbitalportionofthecranium,andreductioninthenumberofdermalskullbones.Thepostcranialadaptationsinparticularhelpedtoimprovethefast-startabilityoftheseambushpredatoryfishes.ThepalaeogeographicrangeofSaurichthyschangedfromavirtuallyglobaldistributionintheEarlyTriassic(indicatingrapiddispersalwithinmarineandfreshwaterecosystemsaftertheend-Permianmassextinction)toanoccurrencemainlyrestrictedtothenorth-westernTethysintheLateTriassic,andalsotowardsincreasingraritywithincontinentaldeposits.Modificationsinthepalaeogeographicdistributionwereaccompaniedbysuccessivelossinglobalspeciesrichnessandwerepossiblyrelatedtointra-Triassicextinctionevents,environmentalalterationsand/orcompetition.
