First report of the Middle Devonian stringocephalid genus Paracrothyris (Brachiopoda) from North Africa

【 摘 要 】

ThestringocephalidgenusParacrothyrisWuinWangetal.,1974isreportedforthefirsttimefromGivetianbedsoftheWesternSahara(NorthwestAfrica).Althoughonlydorsalshellfragmentshavebeenfound,thespecimenscanbeassignedtothisgenuswithcertaintyduetoacombinationofpreservedcharacters:lackofamedianseptum,andthepresenceofcruralplatesincombinationwithatypicalstringocephaloidmorphology.ThegenusParacrothyris(typespeciesP.distortaWuinWangetal.,1974)wasoriginallydescribedfromSouthChinaandlaterfromNevada,U.S.A.,andhasonlybeenreportedfrombedsofGivetianage(lateMiddleDevonian).Fromthepalaeogeographicaldistribution,itisconcludedthatthelarvaemigratedthroughoutthePalaeotethysalongtheshelfofNorthernGondwanabetweenNevadaandSouthChina,supportingthehypothesisofdecreasingprovincialisminlateMiddleDevoniantime.
