Antibioticresistanceisanever-growingproblemfacedbyallmajorsectorsofhealthcare,includingdentistry.Recurrentinfectionsrelatedtomultidrug-resistantbacteriasuchasmethicillin-resistantStaphylococcusaureus,carbapenem-resistantEnterobacteriaceae,andvancomycin-resistantenterococci(VRE)inhospitalsareuntreatableandquestiontheeffectivenessofnotabledrugs.Twomajorreasonsfortheserecurrentinfectionsareacquiredantibioticresistancegenesandbiofilmformation.Noneofthetraditionallyknowneffectivetechniqueshavebeenabletoefficientlyresolvetheseissues.Hence,developmentofahighlyeffectiveantibacterialpracticehasbecomeinevitable.Oneexampleofahard-to-eradicatepathogenindentistryisEnterococcusfaecalis,whichisoneofthemostcommonthreatsobservedinrecurrentrootcanaltreatmentfailures,ofwhichthemostproblematictotreatareitsbiofilm-formingVREstrains.Aneffectiveresponseagainstsuchinfectionscouldbetheuseofbacteriophages(phages).Phagetherapywasfoundtobehighlyeffectiveagainstbiofilmandmultidrug-resistantbacteriaandhasotheradvantageslikeeaseofisolationandpossibilitiesforgeneticmanipulations.Thepotentialofphagetherapyindentistry,inparticularagainstE.faecalisbiofilmsinrootcanals,isalmostunexplored.Herewereviewtheeffortstodevelopphagetherapyagainstbiofilms.WealsofocusonthephagesisolatedagainstE.faecalisanddiscussthepossibilityofusingphagesagainstE.faecalisbiofilminrootcanals.Keywords:phagetherapy;dentalbiofilm;E.faecalis(Published:26September2016)Citation:JournalofOralMicrobiology2016,8:32157-http://dx.doi.org/10.3402/jom.v8.32157
