EarlyPliocenesuidsofEuropearegenerallyrareandpoorlypreserved,butsomeexceptionalfossilshavebeenfoundatRoussillon,France,Villafrancad'Asti,Italy,andKvabebi,Georgia.WeheredescribeandinterpretanalmostcompleteskullofasmallsuidfromMusaituandamandiblefragmentfromDermenji,Moldova,whichaddpreciousinformationtothedatabaseconcerningthesesmallEuropeanPliocenesuids,hereattributedtoDasychoerusarvernensis(Croizetamp;Jobert,1828).TheMoldovanfossilsprovideanimportantbiogeographiclinkbetweentheWesternEuropeanandAsianPlio-Pleistocenesuines.TheMusaituskull,inparticular,showstheelongatedsnout,enlargedcanineflanges,pneumatisedzygomaticarchandlowslungincisorrowcharacteristicofthegenusDasychoerusGray,1873.ThisspeciesisimportantbecauseitrepresentsthegroupfromwhichtheAfricanKolpochoerusVanHoepenamp;VanHoepen,1932lineageprobablyemerged.Thelattergroupisusefulforbiochronologybecause,havingarrivedinAfrica,whereithasbeencalledKolpochoerusdeheinzeliniBrunetamp;White,2001(infactajuniorsynonymofDasychoerusarvernensis)itevolvedrapidlyindimensionsanddentalmorphology.DuringthePliocenethegenusDasychoerus,alreadyadaptedtotropicalandsub-tropicalclimates,waswidespreadinmid-latitudeEurasiaandAfrica,butwhenmuchofmid-latitudeEurasiabecameborealduringthePlio-Pleistocene,therangeofDasychoerusshrankequatorwards,givingwaytoboreallyadaptedSusscrofaLinnaeus,1758overmuchofitsformerterritory,leavingadisjunctdistributionofitsdescendantsinAfrica(HylochoerusThomas,1904,possiblyPotamochoerusGray,1854)andthetropicalislandsoftheFarEast(Dasychoerus).
