Partoftheproblemofinterpretingfossilsuidshasbeenthemisplacementorlossofmaterialdescribedduringthe19thCentury,whichmakescomparisonsdifficultbecauseusuallyonlyocclusalviewsofteethwereillustratedandtheillustrations,althoughlabelledas“naturalsize”oftendifferfromtherealdimensions,sometimesbyasmuchas10%.SomeofthefossilsattributedbyBlainville(1847)andGervais(1850,1859)toSusprovincialisBlainville,1847arepreservedattheUniversityofMontpellierII(somearemislabelledduetothefactthatseveraloftheillustrationsarereversed)andoneoriginalspecimenandasetofcastsispreservedattheMuséumnationald'Histoirenaturelle,Paris.FossilsfoundafterGervais’publicationsrevealthatthedepositsintheneighbourhoodofMontpelliercontainfourspeciesofsuid,Dasychoerusarvernensis(Croizetamp;Jobert,1828),Dasychoerussp.fromKvabebi,“Sus”provincialisBlainville,1847andDasychoerusstrozzii(Meneghini,1862)andthateversinceBlainville's(1847)publication,aswellasthoseofGervais(1850,1859)andaboveallthemonographofStehlin(1899–1900)theconceptofthespecies“Sus”provincialishasbeenbasedonachimeraoftwotaxa(“Sus”provincialisandDasychoerusstrozzii).Inordertoensurestabilityofnomenclature,itisnecessarytoavoidnominatingalectotypethatmightbelongeithertoDasychoerusarvernensisortoDasychoerusstrozzii.ForthistosucceedadetailedrevisionoftheMontpelliersuidsisnecessary.
