ThegadidfishPalimphemusancepsKner,1862isredescribedindetailbasedon43specimensfromtheMiocenedepositsofSt.Margarethen,intheEisenstadt-SopronBasin,Burgenland,Austria.ThemorphoanatomicalanalysisofthematerialreferredtoPalimphemusancepsrevealedthatitcanbedistinguishedfromothermembersofthefamilyGadidaeRafinesque,1810byauniquecombinationofcharacters,including:elongatedandlaterallycompressedbody,headlengthabout1/3ofSL,largemassiveneurocraniumwithoutermarginsofthefrontalsthickenedandornamentedbylongitudinalpitsandridgesalongtheventralsurface,hyomandibulawithlargeventrallydirectedpreopercularprocess,operclewithathickhorizontalribarisingfromthearticularcondyle,anal-fininsertionwellbehindthefirstdorsal-finorigin;preanaldistanceexceedingthebaselengthofthefirstanalfin,lengthofthefirstanal-finbasereduced,45–46(18+27/28)vertebrae,thirddorsalfinwith17–21rays,firstanalfinwith18–21rays,secondanalfinwith18–19rays,caudalfinwith41–43rays,andpectoralfinwith15–18rays.PalimphemusancepsappearstobeabasalgadinecloselyrelatedtothegenusMicromesistiusGill,1867.Likeotherbasalgadinegenera—GadiculusGuichenot,1850,MicromesistiusandTrisopterusRafinesque,1814—PalimphemusancepspossiblywasathermophilousgadidthatinhabitedtheshallowwatersofthecentralParatethysduringtheMiddleMiocene.
