TheWeekinasesblockentryintomitosisbyphosphorylatingandinhibitingtheactivityofthemitoticcyclin-dependentkinase,Cdk1.WehavefoundthatthevariousXenopusWeekinaseshaveuniquetemporalandspatialpatternsofexpressionduringdevelopment.Inaddition,wehaveisolatedandcharacterizedanewWee1-likekinase,XenopusWee2.Bybothinvivoandinvitrotests,XenopusWee2functionsasaWee1-likekinase.ThepreviouslyisolatedWee1-likekinase,XenopusWee1,isexpressedonlyasmaternalgeneproduct.Incontrast,XenopusWee2ispredominantlyazygoticgeneproduct,whilethethirdWeekinase,XenopusMyt1,isbothamaternalandzygoticgeneproduct.ConcurrentwiththechanginglevelsoftheseCdkinhibitorykinases,thepatternofembryoniccelldivisionbecomesasynchronousandspatiallyrestrictedintheXenopusembryo.Interestingly,oncezygotictranscriptionbegins,XenopusWee2isexpressedinregionsoftheembryothataredevoidofmitoticcells,suchastheinvolutingmesoderm.Incontrast,XenopusMyt1isexpressedinregionsoftheembryothathavehighlevelsofproliferation,suchasthedevelopingneuraltissues.TheexistenceofmultipleWeekinasesmayhelpexplainhowdistinctpatternsofcelldivisionariseandareregulatedduringdevelopment.
