TheevolutionarydivergenceofcnidarianandbilaterianlineagesfromtheirremotemetazoanancestoroccurredatanunknowndepthintimebeforetheCambrian,sincecrowngrouprepresentativesofeacharefoundinLowerCambrianfossilassemblages.Wereporthereavarietyofputativeembryonic,larval,andadultmicrofossilsderivingfromPrecambrianphosphoritedepositsofSouthwestChina,whichmaypredatetheCambrianradiationby25–45millionyears.Thesearemostprobablyofcnidarianaffinity.Largenumbersoffossilizedearlyplanula-likelarvaewereobservedunderthemicroscopeinsections.Thoughseveralformsarerepresented,themajoritydisplayremarkableconformity,whichisinconsistentwiththealternativethattheyareartifactualmineralinclusions.Someofthesefossilsarepreservedinsuchhighresolutionthatindividualcellscanbediscerned.Weconfirmindetailanearlierreportofthepresenceinthesamedepositsoftabulates,anextinctcrowngroupanthozoanform.Othersectionsrevealstructuresthatmostcloselyresemblesectionsofbasalmoderncorals.Alargenumberoffossilssimilartomodernhydrozoangastrulaewerealsoobserved.Theseagaindisplayedgreatmorphologicalconsistency.Thoughonlyasingleexampleisavailable,amicroscopicanimalremarkablysimilartoamodernadulthydrozoanisalsopresented.Takentogether,thenewobservationsreportedinthispaperindicatetheexistenceofadiverseandalreadydifferentiatedcnidarianfauna,longbeforetheCambrianevolutionaryevent.Itfollowsthatatleaststemgroupbilateriansmustalsohavebeenpresentatthistime.
