Thefilter-feedinghousesecretedbyurochordateAppendiculariansisamongthemostcomplexextracellularstructuresconstructedbyanyorganism.ThisstructureallowstheAppendiculariatoexploitawiderangeoffoodparticlesizes,includingnanoplanktonandsubmicrometercolloids,establishingthemasanimportantandabundantcomponentofmarinezooplanktoncommunitiesthroughouttheworld.Theoikoplasticepithelium,amonolayerofcellscoveringthetrunkoftheanimal,isresponsibleforsecretionofthehouse.Theepitheliumhasafixednumberofcells,organizedindistinctfields,characterizedbydefinedcellshapesandnuclearmorphologies.Certainstructuresinthehouseappeartobespatiallylinkedtothesedifferentfieldsofcells.UsingcDNArepresentationdifferenceanalysis(cDNARDA)onwholeanimalsattwodifferentdevelopmentalstagesseparatedbythemetamorphictailshiftevent,weisolatedfourfamiliesofgenes(oikosins)thatareexpressedonlyfromspecificsubregionsoftheoikoplasticepithelium.Themolecularpatternsdefinedbyoikosingeneexpressionestablishtheepitheliumasanidealandeasilyaccessiblemonolayercellulartemplateforexploringcoordinateregulationofgeneexpression,cell–cellinteractionsinvolvedinpatternformation,gene/genomeamplification,andtheroleoftemporalchangesinnucleararchitectureinregulatinggeneexpression.
