【 摘 要 】

This article is an exploration of traditional and more recent meeting points between mathe-matical reasoning and political philosophy. Building on B. Saint-Sernin’s typology, several roles of mathematical modelling in the decision sciences are distinguished. The relative importance of these functions has evolved under the influence of rational choice theory, which has in effect brought modelling back in the vicinity of philosophical questions. Examining the contribution of mathematical models appears to involve an effort to identify the conditions under which their possible interpretations are relevant. It also leads to a re-examination of the relationships between political philosophy and the study of political mechanisms.
