【 摘 要 】

Introduction: Erythrina berteroanaUrb., commonly known as pito, is a plant of wide distribution in El Salvador which has traditionally been attributed sedative and anxiolytic properties. Objectives: evaluate the sedative, anxiolytic and toxicological effect of lyophilized aqueous extract of Erythrinaberteroana flowers. Methods: the sedative and anxiolytic effect of the aqueous extract of dried E. berteroana flowers was evaluated at doses of 100, 250 and 500 mg/kg of body weight using unconditioned tests in mice of both sexes. Oral toxicity was also evaluated at a limit dose of 2 000 mg/kg of body weight for 28 days. Results: phytochemical testing revealed the presence of alkaloids, triterpenes and flavonoids in E. berteroana flowers. No alterations were observed in the health status of experimental animals. It was shown that the test substance does not have a sedative effect, but it does have anxiolytic activity, reducing the natural fear of open spaces, heights, spheres and the unknown. Conclusions: results show that E. berteroana aqueous flower extract has no sedative effect, but it does have a slightly effective anxiolytic effect, which could be mainly attributable to the presence of alkaloids and flavonoids in the study substance.
