Thereisaconstantneedfornewtherapeuticinterventionsinawiderangeofinfectiousdiseases.Overthepastfewyears,theimmunotoxinshaveenteredthestageaspromisingantiviraltreatments.ImmunotoxinshavebeenextensivelyexploredincancertreatmentandhaveachievedFDAapprovalinseveralcases.Indeed,thedesignofnewanticancerimmunotoxinsisarapidlydevelopingfield.However,atpresent,severalimmunotoxinshavebeendevelopedtargetingavarietyofdifferentviruseswithhighspecificityandefficacy.Ratherthanblockingaviralorcellularpathwayneededforvirusreplicationanddissemination,immunotoxinsexerttheireffectbykillinganderadicatingthepoolofinfectedcells.Bytargetingavirus‐encodedtargetmolecule,itispossibletoobtainsuperiorselectivityanddrasticallylimitthesideeffects,whichisanimmunotoxin‐relatedchallengethathashinderedthesuccessofimmunotoxinsincancertreatment.Therefore,itseemsbeneficialtouseimmunotoxinsforthetreatmentofvirusinfections.Onerecentexampleshowedthattargetingofvirus‐encoded7transmembrane(7TM)receptorsbyimmunotoxinscouldbeafuturestrategyfordesigningultraspecificantiviraltreatment,ensuringefficientinternalizationandhenceefficienteradicationofthepoolofinfectedcells,bothinvitroandinvivo.Inthisreview,weprovideanoverviewofthemechanismsofactionofimmunotoxinsandhighlighttheadvantagesofimmunotoxinsasfutureanti‐viraltherapies...
