TLRsfunctionininnateimmunitybydetectingconservedstructurespresentinbacteria,viruses,andfungi.AlthoughTLRsdonotnecessarilydistinguishpathogenicorganismsfromcommensals,inthecontextofcompromisedinnateimmunityandcombinedwithpathogensˈeffectormolecules,TLRsdrivethehostresponsetotheorganism.Thisreviewwilldiscusstheevidenceandrole(s)ofTLRsintheresponsetotheopportunisticbacterialpathogen,Pseudomonasaeruginosa,asitrelatestorespiratoryinfectionandCF,inwhichinnateimmunemechanismsareindeedcompromised.Outermembranelipoproteins,LPS,flagellin,andnucleicacidsallserveasligandsforTLR2,‐4,‐5,and‐9,respectively.TheseTLRsandtheirrespectivedownstreameffectormoleculeshaveprovencriticaltothehostresponsetoP.aeruginosa,althoughtheprotectiveeffectsofTLRsmaybeimpairedandinsomecases,enhancedintheCFpatient,contributingtotheparticularsusceptibilityofindividualswiththisdiseasetoP.aeruginosainfection...
