Inthemucosa,theimmunepathwaysdiscriminatingbetweencolonizingandinvasiveCandida,thusinducingtoleranceorinflammation,arepoorlyunderstood.Th17responsesinducedbyCandidaalbicanshyphaearecentralfortheactivationofmucosalantifungalimmunity.AnessentialstepforthediscriminationbetweenyeastsandhyphaeandinductionofTh17responsesistheactivationoftheinflammasomebyC.albicanshyphaeandthesubsequentreleaseofactiveIL‐1βinmacrophages.Inflammasomeactivationinmacrophagesresultsfromdifferencesincell‐wallarchitecturebetweenyeastsandhyphaeandispartlymediatedbythedectin‐1/Sykpathway.Theseresultsdefinethedectin‐1/inflammasomepathwayasthemechanismthatenablesthehostimmunesystemtomountaprotectiveTh17responseanddistinguishbetweencolonizationandtissueinvasionbyC.albicans...
