Evasionorsubversionofhostimmuneresponsesisawell‐establishedparadigmininfectionwithvisceralizingleishmania.Inthisreview,wesummarizecurrentfindingssupportingamodelinwhichleishmaniatargethostregulatorymoleculesandpathways,suchasthePTPSHP‐1andthePI3K/Aktsignalingcascade,topreventeffectivemacrophageactivation.Furthermore,wedescribehowvirulencefactors,secretedbyleishmania,interferewithmacrophageintracellularsignaling.Finally,wediscussmechanismsofsecretionandprovideevidencethatleishmaniausearemarkablyadept,exosome‐basedsecretionmechanismtoexportanddelivereffectormoleculestohostcells.Inadditiontorepresentinganovelmechanismfortraffickingofvirulencefactorsacrossmembranes,recentfindingsindicatethatleishmaniaexosomesmayhavepotentialasvaccinecandidates...
