Theneutrophilisakeyplayerinimmunity,anditsactivitiesareessentialfortheresolutionofinfections.Neutrophil‐pathogeninteractionsusuallytriggeralargearsenalofantimicrobialmeasuresthatleadstothehighlyefficientkillingofpathogens.Inneutrophils,thephagocyticprocess,includingtheformationandmaturationofthephagosome,isinmanyrespectsverydifferentfromthatinotherphagocytes.Althoughthecomplexmechanismsthatcoordinatethemembranetraffic,oxidativeburst,andreleaseofgranulecontentsrequiredforthemicrobicidalactivitiesofneutrophilsarenotcompletelyunderstood,itisevidentthattheyareuniqueanddifferfromthoseinmacrophages.Neutrophilsexhibitmorerapidratesofphagocytosisandhigherintensityofoxidativerespiratoryresponsethandomacrophages.Thephagosomematurationpathwayinmacrophages,whichislinkedtotheendocyticpathway,isreplacedinneutrophilsbytherapiddeliveryofpreformedgranulestononacidicphagosomes.Thisreviewdescribestheplasticityanddynamicsofthephagocyticprocesswithaspecialfocusonneutrophilphagosomematuration...
