【 摘 要 】

Background and Objective: The relationship between elevation of serum lipids and vascular complication of diabetes has long been of interest .The aim of present study was to investigate the relationship between the lipid profiles and its complications in different types of diabetes at different age.  Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, after the institutional ethical clearance and informed consent from all the participants. A total of 50 patients diagnosed for diabetes mellitus were included in the study. All the participants were subjected to the procedures like a detailed history, Urine analysis, Biochemical analysis for fasting blood sugar, Fasting Serum triglycerides, Total cholesterol, High density lipoprotein, Low density lipoprotein and Very low density lipoprotein.  Results: Males had complications more frequently than the females, except in case of retinopathy. The total cholesterol values are increased with increase in age in males, but do not show any correlation with age in females. All the lipid fractions were significantly elevated (p<0.05) in diabetics with peripheral neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy. The HDL cholesterol levels and HDLc/TC ratio were significantly low (p<0.05) in diabetics with retinopathy, nephropathy, ischemic heart disease and CVA.  Conclusions: Diabetes Mel1itus has real impact on lipid metabolism which was substantiated by the fact that all the lipid fractions were elevated in diabetics when compared to healthy controls. So hyperlipidemia is quite common in diabetes.
