【 摘 要 】
The antibacterial screening ofCelosialeptostachyaBenthleaveswas carried out using the agar well diffusion technique andthe methanolic extract oftheleaves showed considerable activity onEscherichiacoliandStaphyllococcus aureusboth at 60 and 80 mg/mlwith zones of inhibition of 15.50, 18.00 and 16.50, 19.00 mm respectively. Whereas, itshowed activity only ataconcentration of 80 mg/mlwith azone of inhibitionof 17.50 mm onSalmonella typhi. However, theC.leptostachyaBenth extract showed no activity onShigella dysentriae.Thephytochemicalproperties of the extract were also determined.Theresultreveals the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, and tannins, whereasphlobatannins, anthraquinones, steroids and saponins werenot detected in the extract. The extractcontainssome major bioactive compound that inhibit the growth of microorganismsthereby proving very effective as alternative source of antibiotics.
