【 摘 要 】

A corecomponent of the adjustment to blindness process is training, which ideally involvesthe use of sleepshades. This literature review investigates the reasons whysleepshade training typically lasts between six and nine months when attendedon a full-time basis. The development of alternative techniques is often citedas the primary component of adjustment to blindness training, but the emotionaladjustment is also critical and well-documented. The alternative techniquesmust be practiced until they become consistent and automatic and can beperformed almost without thinking. The consistency and automaticity enabledependable problem solving and the development of problem-solving skills. Blindconsumers must have enough experience under sleepshades to develop theconfidence and feelings of normality that enable them to put their alternativetechniques and problem-solving skills into action. Employment outcomes forconsumers who undergo long-term sleepshade training appear more positive thanemployment outcomes for those who do not.
