Thegutmicrobiotaisacomplexanddynamicmicrobialecosystemthatplaysafundamentalroleinhostphysiology.Locally,thegutcommensalmicrobes/hostsymbioticrelationshipisvitalforbarrierfortification,nutrientabsorption,resistanceagainstintestinalpathogens,andthedevelopmentandmaintenanceofthemucosalimmunesystem.Itisnowclearthattheeffectsoftheindigenousintestinalfloraextendbeyondthegut,rangingfromshapingsystemicimmuneresponsestometabolicandbehavioralfunctions.However,theunderlyingmechanismsofthegutmicrobiota/systemicimmunesysteminteractionsremainlargelyunknown.Myeloidcellsrespondtomicrobialsignals,includingthosederivedfromcommensals,andinitiateinnateandadaptiveimmuneresponses.Inthisreview,wefocusontheimpactofthegutmicrobiotaonmyeloidcellsatextraintestinalsites.Inparticular,wediscusshowcommensal‐derivedsignalsaffectsteady‐statemyelopoiesisandcellularfunctionandhowthatinfluencestheresponsetoinfectionandcancertherapy...
