Th17cellscontributetomucosalimmunitybystimulatingepithelialcellstoinduceantimicrobialpeptides,granulopoiesis,neutrophilrecruitment,andtissuerepair.RecentstudieshaveidentifiedimportantrolesforcommensalmicrobiotaandAhrligandsinstabilizingTh17geneexpressioninvivo,linkingenvironmentalcuestoCD4Tcellpolarization.EpigeneticchangesthatoccurduringthetransitionfromnaïvetoeffectorTh17cellsincreasetheaccessibilityofil17a,il17f,andil22locitotranscriptionfactors.Inaddition,Th17cellsmaintainthepotentialforexpressingT‐bet,Foxp3,orGATA‐bindingprotein‐3,explainingtheirplasticnatureundervariouscytokinemicroenvironments.AlthoughCD4TcellsaremajorsourcesofIL‐17andIL‐22,innatecellpopulations,includingγδTcells,NKcells,andlymphoidtissue‐inducercells,areearlysourcesofthesecytokinesduringIL‐23‐drivenresponses.EpithelialcellsandfibroblastsareimportantcellulartargetsforIL‐17invivo;however,recentdatasuggestthatmacrophagesandBcellsarealsostimulateddirectlybyIL‐17.Thus,Th17cellsinteractwithmultiplepopulationstofacilitateprotectionagainstintracellularandextracellularpathogens...
