Traumaticinjuriesinduceacomplexhostresponsethatdisruptsimmunesystemhomeostasisandpredisposespatientstoopportunisticinfectionsandinflammatorycomplications.Theresponsetoinjuriesvariesconsiderablybytypeandseverity,aswellasbyindividualvariables,suchasage,sex,andgenetics.Thesevariablesmakestudyingtheimpactoftraumaontheimmunesystemchallenging.Nevertheless,advanceshavebeenmadeinunderstandinghowinjuriesinfluenceimmunesystemfunctionaswellastheimmunecellsandpathwaysinvolvedinregulatingtheresponsetoinjuries.Thisreviewprovidesanoverviewofcurrentknowledgeabouthowtraumaticinjuriesaffectimmunesystemphenotypeandfunction.Wediscussthecurrentideasthattraumaticinjuriesinduceauniquetypeofaresponsethatmaybetriggeredbyacombinationofendogenousdangersignals,includingalarmins,DAMPs,self‐antigens,andcytokines.Additionally,wereviewandproposestrategiesforredirectinginjuryresponsestohelprestoreimmunesystemhomeostasis...
