Apartfromtheirpivotalroleinthehostdefenseagainstpathogens,leukocytesarealsoessentialforbonerepair,asfracturehealingisinitiatedanddirectedbyaphysiologicalinflammatoryresponse.Leukocytesinfiltratethefracturehematomaandproduceseveralgrowthanddifferentiationfactorsthatregulateessentialdownstreamprocessesoffracturehealing.Systemicinflammationaltersthenumbersandpropertiesofcirculatingleukocytes,andwehypothesizethatthesechangesaremaintainedintissueleukocytesandwillleadtoimpairmentoffracturehealingaftermajortrauma.Theunderlyingmechanismswillbediscussedinthisreview...
