Thehumanendometriumisexposedtocyclicalfluctuationsofovarian‐derivedsexsteroidsresultinginproliferation,differentiation(decidualization),andmenstruation.Aninfluxofleukocytes(upto15%macrophages)occursduringthelatterstagesofthemenstrualcycle,includingmenses.Webelievetheendometrialmacrophageislikelytoplayanimportantroleduringthemenstrualcycle,especiallyinthecontextoftissuedegradation(menstruation),whichrequiresregulatedrepair,regeneration,andphagocyticclearanceofendometrialtissuedebristore‐establishtissueintegrityinpreparationforfertility.Thephenotypeandregulationofthemacrophagewithintheendometriumduringthemenstrualcycleandinteractionswithothercelltypesthatconstitutetheendometriumarecurrentlyunknownandareimportantareasofstudy.Understandingthemanyrolesoftheendometrialmacrophageiscrucialtoourbodyofknowledgeconcerningfunctionalityoftheendometriumaswellastoourunderstandingofdisordersofthemenstrualcycle,whichhavemajorimpactsonthehealthandwell‐beingofwomen...
