Progressinscienceismadewithkeydiscoveries,correctanalyses,wrongstatements,anddisputeswithinthescientificcommunity.Despitescientificcontroversies,ElieMetchnikoffhasallowedthetheoryofphagocytestotriumph.Startinghiscareerasazoologist,Metchnikoffbecameapathologist,beautifullydefiningtheroleofmonocytes,macrophages,andneutrophilsduringinflammationandinnateimmunity.Thediscoveriesofimmunecellsweremadebyotheroutstandingsscientists,suchasPaulEhrlich,whosekeycontributionstohumoralimmunityledhimtosharetheNobelPrizewithMetchnikoff.LudwigAschoffgroupedcertaincellsunderthetermRES,accordingtotheirpropensityforabsorbingandstoringvitalstains.Thisclassificationwasnotalwaysasourceofaccuratediscoveries,andresearchontheexactfunctionofREScellsledtosomewanderings.Thisisillustratedbystudiesaboutthenatureoftheantibody‐producingcells,whichwerefirstthoughttobelongtotheRES,beforebeingidentifiedasplasmocytesandlymphocytes...
