To date, failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) remains a therapy-refractory clinical condition after spinal surgery. The antiadhesion membrane is applied to prevent FBSS by isolating fibrosis; however, the inflammation stimulated by the foreign body and surgical trauma needs to be further resolved simultaneously. Therefore, we developed new electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) fibrous membranes loaded with celecoxib (CEL) to prevent fibrosis and inflammation associated with FBSS. The CEL-loaded PCL fibers were randomly distributed, and the drug was released over two weeks. Fluorescence micrographs revealed that the fibroblasts proliferated less on the PCL-CEL fibrous membranes than in the PCL group and the blank control. In the rat laminectomy model after 4 weeks, magnetic resonance imaging of epidural fibrosis was least in the PCL-CEL group. Expression of COX-2 and PGE 2 was lower in the PCL-CEL group. It concluded that the CEL-loaded PCL membrane could reduce fibrosis and inflammation in a rat model of FBSS via COX-2/PGE 2 signaling pathways.

Sensory gating is a neurophysiological measure of inhibition that is characterized by a reduction in the P 50 , N 100 , and P 200 event-related potentials to a repeated identical stimulus. It was proposed that abnormal sensory gating is involved in the neural pathological basis of some severe mental disorders. Since then, the prevailing application of sensory gating measures has been in the study of neuropathology associated with schizophrenia and so on. However, sensory gating is not only trait-like but can be also state-like, and measures of sensory gating seemed to be affected by several factors in healthy subjects. The objective of this work was to clarify the roles of acute stress and gender in sensory gating. Data showed acute stress impaired inhibition of P 50 to the second click in the paired-click paradigm without effects on sensory registration leading to worse P 50 sensory gating and disrupted attention allocation reflected by attenuated P 200 responses than control condition, without gender effects. As for N 100 and P 200 gating, women showed slightly better than men without effects of acute stress. Data also showed slightly larger N 100 amplitudes across clicks and significant larger P 200 amplitude to the first click for women, suggesting that women might be more alert than men.

Many problems are encountered in the construction of bifurcated tunnels due the abrupt change in section, small clear distance, and large section. Progress in the direction of tunnel construction is limited by the large-span section; therefore, a special method of construction that involves constructing a guiding tunnel first followed by reverse excavation was adopted to construct the large-span bifurcation section of the Liantang tunnel of Shenzhen Eastern Transit Expressway in China. The stability criterion of the surrounding rock of the middle wall in the section of multiple arch and small clear distance is studied by theoretical analysis, and the internal stress and corresponding ultimate strength of the middle wall under different buried depths and widths of the middle wall are calculated by the stability criterion. In this study, 3D finite-difference software was used to simulate the excavation process under forward and reverse excavation conditions. The results show that the displacement field and internal force field distribution are similar for both excavation methods, and the tunneling first and reverse excavation construction method is safe and reliable.

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) provides insurance coverage for single-employer and multiemployer pension plans in private sector. It has played an important role in protecting the retirement security for over 1.5 million people since it was established about half a decade ago. PBGC collects insurance premiums from employers that sponsor insured pension plans for its coverage and receives funds from pension plans that it takes over. To address the issue of underfunded plans that the PBGC has, this work studies how to evaluate risk-based premiums for the PBGC. Inspired by a couple of existing work in which the premature termination of pension fund and distress termination of sponsor assets are analyzed separately, our work examines the two types of terminations under one framework and considers the occurrence of each termination dynamically. Given that market regime might have a big impact on the dynamics of both pension fund and sponsor’s assets, we thus formulate our model using a continuous-time two-state Markov chain in which bull market and bear market are delineated. We thus formulate our model using a continuous-time two-state Markov Chain in which bull market and bear market are delineated. In other words, the pension fund and sponsor assets are market dependent in our work. Given that this additional uncertainty described by regime switching makes the market incomplete, we therefore utilize the Esscher transform to determine an equivalent martingale measure and apply the risk neutral pricing method to obtain the closed-form expressions for premium of PBGC. In addition, we carry out numerical analysis to demonstrate our results and observe that premium increases according to the retirement benefit irrespective of the type of terminations. In comparison to the case of early distress termination of sponsor assets, the premium goes up more quickly when premature termination of pension funds occurs first due to the fact that pension fund is the first venue of retirement security. Furthermore, we look at how the premium changes with respect to other key parameters as well and make some detailed observations in the section of numerical analysis.

This article investigates the fixed-time synchronization issue for linearly coupled complex networks with discontinuous nonidentical nodes by employing state-feedback discontinuous controllers. Based on the fixed-time stability theorem and linear matrix inequality techniques, novel conditions are proposed for concerned complex networks, under which the fixed-time synchronization can be realized onto any target node by using a set of newly designed state-feedback discontinuous controllers. To some extent, this article extends and improves some existing results on the synchronization of complex networks. In the final numerical example section, the Chua circuit network is introduced to indicate the effectiveness of our method by showing its fixed-timely synchronization results with the proposed control scheme.

Because stochastic fault cases (i.e., opportunistic maintenance strategy) of the equipment are not considered in the condition-based maintenance decision of the system, which will deviate from the actual situation, a system condition-based maintenance scheduling model considering opportunistic maintenance strategy is proposed in this paper. To implement the system maintenance strategies, the correlation set is formulated by considering the relationship among different equipment. According to renewal process theory, the availability of the correlation set considering planned maintenance and opportunity maintenance is deduced and the maintenance strategy of the system is realized. Then, to reflect the relationship between equipment maintenance and system operation, a system state scheduling model aiming at minimizing the sum of maintenance risk and failure risk as well as considering system resource constraints is proposed, thus obtaining the optimal maintenance schedule based on system state. Finally, a simple test system and IEEE-RTS79 node system are employed to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed maintenance model, and it also verified that the proposed model can be integrated into the power system condition-based maintenance theory.
