Existing person search methods typically focus on improving person detection accuracy. This ignores the model inference efficiency, which however is fundamentally significant for real-world applications. In this work, we address this limitation by investigating the scalability problem of person search involving both model accuracy and inference efficiency simultaneously. Specifically, we formulate a Hierarchical Distillation Learning (HDL) approach. With HDL, we aim to comprehensively distil the knowledge of a strong teacher model with strong learning capability to a lightweight student model with weak learning capability. To facilitate the HDL process, we design a simple and powerful teacher model for joint learning of person detection and person re-identification matching in unconstrained scene images. Extensive experiments show the modelling advantages and cost-effectiveness superiority of HDL over the state-of-the-art person search methods on three large person search benchmarks: CUHK-SYSU, PRW, and DukeMTMC-PS. Aims: Comprehensive echocardiography assessment of right ventricular (RV) impairment has not been reported in critically ill patients with COVID-19. We detail the specific phenotype and clinical associations of RV impairment in COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Methods: Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) measures of RV function were collected in critically unwell patients for associations with clinical, ventilatory and laboratory data. Results: Ninety patients (25.6% female), mean age 52.0 10.8 years, veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VVECMO) (42.2%) were studied. A significantly higher proportion of patients were identified as having RV dysfunction by RV fractional area change (FAC) (72.0%,95% confidence interval (CI) 61.0-81.0) and RV velocity time integral (VTI) (86.4%, 95 CI 77.3-93.2) than by tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) (23.8%, 95 CI 16.0-33.9), RVS' (11.9%, 95% CI 6.6-20.5) or RV free wall strain (FWS) (35.3%, 95% CI 23.6-49.0). RV VTI correlated strongly with RV FAC (p <= 0.01). Multivariate regression demonstrated independent associations of RV FAC with NTpro-BNP and PVR. RV-PA coupling correlated with PVR (univariate p < 0.01), as well as RVEDAi (p < 0.01), and RVESAi (p < 0.01), and was associated with P/F ratio (p 0.026), PEEP (p 0.025), and ALT (p 0.028). Conclusions: Severe COVID-19 ARDS is associated with a specific phenotype of RV radial impairment with sparing of longitudinal function. Clinicians should avoid interpretation of RV health purely on long-axis parameters in these patients. RV-PA coupling potentially provides important additional information above standard measures of RV performance in this cohort. <(c)> 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Heterogeneous microstructures have been proposed to optimize the mechanical properties in the re-spect of strength and ductility synergy in many alloy systems. In this work, the multi-phase heterostructured microstructure consisting of fine grains and coarse grains where the ferrite is embedded in the vicinity of the nano-grains was obtained by regulating the thermomechanical processing parameters. A yield strength of 1.2 GPa which is more than two times higher than the coarse grained counterpart with less uniform elongation loss is achieved in the multi-phase hetero-structured steel. The microscopic load transfer in this complex microstructure is investigated by the in situ high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The persistent strain hardening is ascribed to the hetero-deformation induced stress associated with the joint activation of transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) and twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) effects. An N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed aza-benzoin reaction of benzothiazole-2-carboxaldehydes and N-sulfonylimines is reported for the first time. The target benzothiazole-containing aminoketone products bearing different substituents and substitution patterns can be obtained in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. Biochar has been deemed one of the most promising sorbents for the removal of organic pollutants from aqueous solution. In this study, potassium hydroxide-modified Enteromorpha prolifera biochars (PEBCs) were prepared for the first time and applied for efficient sorption of a typical antibiotic, sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The characteristics of PEBCs, including morphology, pore structure, graphitization degree, surface functional groups, and surface element composition, were investigated. Moreover, sorption kinetic and isotherm experiments were carried out to explore the sorption process, performance, and mechanisms. The maximum sorption capacity for SMX can reach 744 mg g-1, which is much higher than that reported for sorbents. The sorption of SMX onto PEBCs was controlled by both physical and chemical processes. Moreover, pore filling, hydrogen bonding, partitioning, 7C-7C stacking, and electrostatic interactions were possible sorption mechanisms. This study indicated that the structure and properties of algal biochar can be further improved by potassium hydroxide modification at high temperature and applied as an excellent sorbent for the removal of antibiotics from aqueous solution.

We seek to test whether innovation, measured by the number of accepted patents improves or worsens the environment in China. We hypothesize the existence of an inverse U-shaped curve, which differs by industry and provincial level of development. In that context, we test for a quadratic relationship between accepted patents and CO2 emissions per capita in 30 provinces and 32 economic sectors of China. We use a novel fixed effect panel data quantile (FEQR) regression estimator and differentiate between energy-intensive and non-energy intensive sectors, as well as between more and less-developed provinces of China. We find evidence for an inverse Ushaped relation between patent generation and CO2 emissions for both, more and less energy-intensive sectors, suggesting that at low levels of innovation new technologies tend to be dirty, but at high levels of innovation new technologies tend to be green. The same relationship holds for less-developed provinces as well. For moredeveloped provinces, we find the opposite relation, which we explain with a rebound effect.
