【 摘 要 】

An area of about 25 square miles in thewestern part of the San Gabriel Mountains wasmapped on a scale of 1000 feet to the inch. Specialattention was given to the structural geology, particularly the relations between the differentsystems of faults, of which the San Gabriel faultsystem and the Sierra Madre fault system are themost important ones. The present distributionand relations of the rocks suggests that the southernblock has tilted northward against a more stablemass of old rocks which was raised up during aPliocene or post-Pliocene orogeny. It is suggestedthat this northward tilting of the block resultedin the group of thrust faults which comprise theSierra Madre fault system. It is show that thishypothesis fits the present distribution of therocks and occupies a logical place in the geologichistory of the region as well or better than anyother hypothesis previously offered to explainthe geology of the region.
