The habitat of the rare Sandhills lily, Lilium pyrophilum was studied by comparing 30plots containing the lily and 30 plots lacking the lily. Field studies measured soil andvegetation within the plots. Results were used to develop search criteria for this FederalSpecies of Concern.A wetland category status of FACW+ is recommended for L. pyrophilum. Liliumpyrophilum habitat has an open canopy, dominantly covered by herbs and shrubs found onside slopes and floodplains. Lilium pyrophilum sites are more species rich. It is not found onvery sandy soils, and can tolerate a range of organic to mineral-organic soils.Soil within L. pyrophilum plots contained more phosphorus and sulfur, and lowerweight per volume. Site wetness index and site species richness were also higher in L.pyrophilum plots. Aronia arbutifolia, Pinus palustris, Pinus serotina, Pinus taeda, Smilaxglauca and Sphagnum spp. were significantly more abundant in lily plots. These species canbe used as indicators to help identify potential L. pyrophilum habitat.
