【 摘 要 】

The papacy of Clement VI (1342-1352) was distinguished byits political activism, its attempt to resurrect the impetusfor crusading, and its efforts to attract the best andbrightest talents to Avignon. The attributes whichcharacterize his pontificate highlight his interest inresurrecting the papal monarchy. His political conservatismwas manifested most vividly in his struggles with the Germanemperors Louis IV and Charles IV. Clement VI asserted thatpapal auctoritas superseded temporal imperium. Canonisticand publicists arguments were alloyed with Clement's ownunique views to stem the loss of the papacy's secular power.Clement VI's political dynamism was also displayed inrenewed efforts to create an expeditionary force to wage aholy war against the Muslims. His Smyrna Crusade and HolyLeague achieved the last resurgence of western Christianinfluence in the Levant in the Middle Ages. Finally, theintellectual legacy of Clement VI is one of humanisticinvolvement. In the pontificate of Clement VI can be foundthe seeds of Renaissance humanism, represented by realisticart forms, a rebirth of classical literature, and thepresence of humanist scholars at the papal court. Confinedby the realities of the Anglo-French war and the BlackDeath, Clement VI was able to achieve only limited results.
