【 摘 要 】

The phenomenon of homelessness among young West Indians in Britain has not been fully documented or carefully studied for obvious reasons, particularly the temporal one. This attempt to understand and explain the problem is made by someone using the technique of Participant Observation. However, the study is placed within the context of race relations in Britain and the West Indies and makes reference to the historical roots of these relations. An analysis is made of a community response to homelessness in Handsworth, Birmingham. The institution that emerged is shown to be the outcome of the visions, skills and shortcomings of the founder-members, tempered by the constraints imposed by external bodies and the needs of homeless youngsters. Some lessons have been learned from the encounters between these entities.
