【 摘 要 】

The contemporary Catalan theatre space is caught up in conflicting discourses that interlink language, politics and identity. Current approaches are unable to account for the phenomena of transatlantic theatre connections, such as the Argentine connection, because they have a tendency to read the space in terms of a Castilian-Catalan language binary. This dissertation draws upon aspects of cultural theory, examining the (post)colonial, postmodern aspects of the Catalan cultural space, and investigating how theatre, particularly how theatre in the city vortex, Barcelona, fits into this cultural space. The study goes on to take the contemporary Argentine theatre practitioner, Javier Daulte, as a case study, as an example of transatlantic theatre in the city. It examines Daulte’s Catalan production of his play ¿Estás ahí? (Ets Aquí?) to demonstrate how he has been received and understood within the performative context of the city. The aim of this investigation is to move beyond the language binary by demonstrating how the Argentine theatre presence in Barcelona provides evidence of a far more complex articulation of exchange, in the relationship between theatre and cultural identity, than has previously been supposed.
