【 摘 要 】

The principal aim of this thesis is the clarification of some relationships between occupation, energy expenditure, patterns of physical activity and energy and nutrient intake of groups of healthy, free-living men and women aged between 50 and 75 years. A subsidiary aim is to review the findings of the research in the light of current nutritional concepts, most importantly, the concepts developed in the FAO/WHQ/UNU, (1985) Expert Consultation on Energy and Protein Requirements. When the research began, national and international food and policy decisions concerning the nutritional requirements of the age group had to be based largely on intelligent guesswork. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Committee on Calorie Requirements (1957) stated that "present knowledge of the influence of aging on the quantity of food eaten and energy expenditure is deficient and further investigations are needed". This thesis presents the results of studies of the total energy expenditure, physical activity and energy and nutrient intake of 13 groups of middle-aged and elderly Scottish men and women with particular reference to the effect of occupation and age on these variables. The findings are discussed in relation to those of comparable studies and to current nutritional concepts.(Abstract shortened by ProQuest.).
