Smallindigenousspecies(SIS)addedtocarppolyculturepondsinNepalhaveincreasedproduction,economicreturns,andnutritionalwellbeingforfarmers.However,therehasbeenlittleresearchtodetermineanoptimalstockingdensityofSIS.Thus,themainobjectiveofthisexperimentwastoidentifyanoptimalstockingdensitytopromoteoverallpondproductionandprofitsofatypicalsix-­‐speciescarppolyculturesysteminNepal.Thiswasaccomplishedbycomparingtheeffectsofthreedifferentstockingdensitiesofpunti(Puntiussophore)anddedhuwa(Esomusdanricus)oncarpproduction,SISnetgain,SISharvest,waterquality,andeconomicreturns.AsexpectedSISstockingdensityhadnosignificanteffectoncarpproductionorwaterquality.Stockingdensitynegativelyaffecteddedhuwanetgain,whichwastheproductofreproduction,survival,andimmigrationoremigrationfromponds,butdidnotaffectharvest.Conversely,stockingdensitydidnotaffect puntinetgain,butdidpositivelyaffectharvest.Althoughstockedpondsexperiencedvariablenetgainofpunti,theyhadhigherharveststhanpondswithnostocking.Fordedhuwaandcarp,isolationandaveragesizeatstockingbestpredictednetgain.BudgetanalysisshowedstockingofSIScouldincreaseprofitbyanaverageof$536/yr.AlthoughfarmersoftenreportedhighernetgainwithoutstockingSIS,stockingcouldcreateamorereliableharvestofpuntiandthusamorereliablesourceforhouseholdconsumptionorsales.
