TheeasternregionofNorthCarolinaishometoover2,500activehogfarms.Thesehogfarmsarereferredtoasconfinedanimalfeedingoperations(CAFOs)becausehogsaredenselycrowdedintosmallareas.Inthefieldofenvironmentaljustice,therehavebeenanumberofstudiesrelatingenvironmentaljusticeimplicationstothesitingofCAFO.ThisstudyspatiallyexaminesthelocationoftheCAFOsineasternNorthCarolinatodetermineifhigherpercentagesofdisadvantagedpopulationslivenearthesepollutingfacilities.Twosetsofanalyseswereconductedforthisstudy.ThefirstanalysiscomparesthedemographicsaroundCAFOssitedwithinthe100-‐yearfloodzonewithCAFOssitedoutsidethe100-‐yearfloodzone.ThefindingsfromthisanalysissuggestthatcomparingthemeandemographicsaroundCAFOsinthe100-‐yearfloodzone,comparedtothemeandemographicsaroundCAFOsnotlocatedinthe100-‐yearfloodzone,doesnotprovidestatisticallysignificantresultssupportingthehypothesisthatmoreminority,low-‐income,andlowereducationgroupswilllivenearCAFOswithinthevulnerable100-‐yearfloodzone.ThesecondanalysisisalongitudinalanalysisthatspatiallyexaminesthesitingofCAFOsineasternNorthCarolina,andthenstatisticallyanalyzesthedemographicsofcensustractswithinoneandthreemilesofthesefacilitiesin1990and2000.Ingeneral,thelongitudinalanalysisfindsthatgreaterpercentagesofHispanic,low-‐education,andlow-‐incomepopulationslivenearCAFOsinEasternNorthCarolinaascomparedtorandompointswithinthesameregion.Also,between1990and2000,thedisparitiesbetweenCAFOlocationsandrandomlocationswidenedforanumberofkeydemographics,suchaspercentHispanicandaveragehousingvalue.
