【 摘 要 】
Letters written in 1872 by Thomas G. Newman to his sister Mary inspired the following manuscript. These letters were discovered in the personal archives of Ollie Mae Newman Crawford, the author;;s grandmother, in 1986 while doing some personal genealogical research. These letters are a piece of history thoughtfully preserved for unknown reasons. What is most important is that these letters, and others like them, were written by millions of Americans who may have gone from the cradle to the grave unknown except to family, friends, and, sometimes, enemies.
