【 摘 要 】

This paper is a study of four men during the timethey were in the Civil War. The chief figure was JamesMellor, a farmer from the Coulee Region.The letters they wrote home featured life in the camps,thoughts on the battles and their concerns of home conditions.The purpose of this paper is to examine the life of thecommon soldier as shown in these letters and publishedsources. Comparing their letters with other Civil Warcollections added insight into the thoughts and comments ofthe fighting men from La Crosse.-
