Modernchildrenareplaguedwithstrugglesthatwereunheardofdecadesago.Duetobusylifestylesandlimitlessuseoftechnology,thesocial-‐emotionalandphysicalwell-‐beingofchildrenisatstake.Childrentodayhaveincreasedattentionproblems,anxiety,andalackofself-‐regulationandself-‐awareness.Mindfulnessisthepracticeofsittingstillandsilent,focusingattentioninward.Mindfulpracticescultivatepeaceandcalmwithinthechild,betterequippinghim/hertohandlethestressorsoflife.TheimplementationofasilenceareaintoaMontessorienvironmentfacilitatesthesepracticesbyprovidingchildrenwithaspacedevotedtobeingstillandsilent.Thisactionresearchstudysurroundstheimplementationofasilenceareaasameanstobenefitthesocial-‐emotionalbehaviorofstudents.Thestudents’useoftheareawasrecordedeachday.Behaviordatawasgatheredtoobservetheimpactthesilenceareahadonthestudents.Thefindingsshowedadecreaseintheamountofbehaviorthatrequiredredirection.Parentsurveyswerealsoconductedtogatherdataandobservationsofstudentbehaviorathome.Thosesurveyresultssuggestedanincreaseinself-‐awarenessandself-‐regulationasobservedbytheparents.Overall,theresultsofthisstudyhaveshownthatregularuseofthesilenceareanotonlyprovidesstudentswithmomentsofsolitude,butalsobenefitstheirsocial-‐emotionaldevelopmentthroughgainsofself-‐regulationandself-‐awareness.Althoughmoreresearchonthetopicof;;mindfulnessandchildren”isemerging,researchconcurswiththesefindingsandtheirpromisingeffects.
