【 摘 要 】

World Development Indicators 2012 is acompilation of relevant, high-quality, and internationallycomparable statistics about development and the quality ofpeople's lives. Organized around six themes, worldview, people, the environment, the economy, states andmarkets, and global links, it aims to put data into thehands of policy makers, development specialists, students,and the public. The full dataset used to produce WorldDevelopment Indicators contains more than 1,000 indicatorsfor 216 economies, with many time series extending back to1960.And, as a major part of the World Bank's opendata initiative, the data are freely available for use andreuse under an open license. A companion printed volume, thelittle data book 2012, presents a selection of indicatorsfor each economy, and the biennial statistics for smallstates presents data for less-populated developingcountries. Any assessment of the Millennium DevelopmentGoals must acknowledge that amid all the signs of progress,there are gaps. Some targets will not be reached in thisdecade or the next. Likewise the statistical record is stillincomplete; Continuing progress will require renewedcommitment and careful monitoring.
