The present guide mining together-whenlarge-scale mining meets artisanal mining is an importantstep to better understanding the conflict dynamics andunderlying issues between large-scale and small-scalemining. This guide for action not only points to some of thechallenges that both parties need to deal with in order tobuild a more constructive relationship, but most importantlyit sheds more light on some potential interventions forconflict prevention, management, and even transformation. This guide, then, represents a step in the right directionto start transforming the relationship between large-scaleand artisanal miners through win-win solutions that emergeout of the genuine interaction and dialogue of allstakeholders involved: governments, companies, communities, miners and development organizations. Large-Scale Mining(LSM) companies increasingly come across Artisanal andSmall-scale Mining (ASM) workers during their exploration orproduction activities in the developing world. The ASM-LSMrelationship is often conflictual because both types ofminers compete for the same resource or because theyperceive each other as a threat. However the ASM-LSMrelationship is now also undergoing a largely positiveevolution in part thanks to new Corporate SocialResponsibility (CSR) commitments. This guide is the resultof this collaboration and provides an informative overviewof the growing experiences of the most typical ASM-LSMissues and guidance for appropriate interventions.
