Crowdfunding is an Internet-enabled wayfor businesses or other organizations to raise money in theform of either donations or investments from multipleindividuals. This new form of capital formation emerged inthe wake of the 2008 financial crisis largely because of thedifficulties faced by artisans, entrepreneurs andearly-stage enterprises in raising funds. Crowdfunding takesadvantage of crowd-based decision-making and innovation, andapplies it to the funding of projects or businesses. Usingsocial networks, social profiles, and web-basedcommunication, individuals and companies have raisedbillions of dollars in debt, equity, and donations forprojects. Building a crowdfunding ecosystem depends on keyenablers to build trust. This document explores specificstrategies to drive crowdfunding, the risks in crowdfundingand how to mitigate them, and the potential use ofcrowdfunding in the developing world.
