Pakistan experienced severe floodingafter torrential monsoon rains hit southern Sindh and theadjoining areas of Punjab and north-eastern Balochistan inAugust 2011. Flash floods triggered by the monsoon raincaused severe damage to infrastructure in the affectedareas. Entire villages and urban centers have been flooded,homes have been destroyed, and over a million acres of cropsand agricultural lands have been damaged. A Damage and NeedsAssessment (DNA) has been commissioned in the wake of thefloods. The DNA assesses the extent of the damage and theneeds for rehabilitation and reconstruction of the damagedassets and infrastructure, and restoration of livelihoodsand economic productivity. It provides the strategicunderpinnings for medium- to long-term post-floodsreconstruction, recovery planning, prioritization, andprogramming. This report quantifies physical damage andpresents sector level recovery and reconstructionstrategies. Taking into account the extent of the damage andthe proposed strategies, the report then quantifiescorresponding needs.
