【 摘 要 】

This volume emphasizes instead thenotion of 'good fit,' taking the position thatwelfare-promoting policies, institutions, and governancemust be tailored, at least in part, to a country'sspecific context. In this vein, the volume presents ananalytical framework for assessing a country'spolitical economy and institutional environment as itrelates to natural resource management and, on that basis,it offers a substantial set of targeted prescriptions acrossthe natural resource value chain that are technically soundand compatible with the identified underlying incentives. Inother words, the objective of this book is to helpdevelopment practitioners unravel the political economydynamics surrounding natural resource management in order tocomplement their technically grounded engagement. To thisend, the analytical approach has been two-pronged. First, case studies were conducted on the political economy of thehydrocarbon and mineral value chains in 13 countries in theAfrica, East Asia and Pacific, and Latin America and theCaribbean regions. Second, in light of this empiricalmaterial, the book highlights the current frontier ofapplied political economy analysis on resource dependence. This volume synthesizes the empirical and the theoreticalwith an emphasis on illuminating the implications foroperational engagement in resource-dependent settings.
