【 摘 要 】
This volume is an introduction to thetheories and policies that affect economic growth andpoverty. It is a compilation of lecture notes used inface-to-face and e-learning courses presented by the WorldBank Institute's (WBI) Poverty Program during 2004-08.The volume is divided into three parts. Part one discussesbasic concepts and measurement issues pertaining to poverty, national income, and economic growth. Part two deals withthe macroeconomic policies that are critical for economicgrowth in the short term. It covers government enforcedfiscal and exchange-rate policies and the roles of financialinstitutions, development assistance (or aid), debt relief, and trade policies. Part three covers the structural andsectoral policies that affect longer-term economic growthand poverty reduction. To underscore the impact of goodgovernance and effective service delivery in growth andpoverty reduction, separate chapters are devoted toinstitutional and technological development, education, health, labor, and land. The volume ends with a chapter thatsummarizes knowledge of growth theory, reviews the processof growth in 13 successful countries, and draws outimplications for other developing countries. The authorshope that this chapter may be of help to policy makers inidentifying the constraints to economic growth anddevelopment that may be unique to each country.
