【 摘 要 】
The study on the sources of rural growthin Burundi results from a meticulous work carried out byeminent experts of the World Bank in response to a requestof the Government of Burundi. It describes the globalenvironment, which explains poverty aggravation and buildsproposals to overcome most binding constraints to growth inBurundi. This study is an important contribution in thefight against poverty, as it identifies ways to resumegrowth in the rural world, which accounts for 90 percent ofemployment, represents more than 50 percent of grossdomestic product (GDP), and over 80 percent of exportearnings. Increasing rural income will have large multipliereffects on the national economy. This will enable breakingthe vicious circle of poverty and starting a virtuous circleof economic growth and poverty reduction. The studyunderlines that reforming export-crop sub-sectors such ascoffee, tea, and horticulture will help increaseparticipation in higher value specialty markets. Enteringthese market segments will increase export revenues andproducers' incomes.
