【 摘 要 】
This review of the active portfolio ofWorld Bank projects aimed at improving urban environmentalquality was carried out during 2002-03 in order to assessthe level of commitment of the institution to urbansustainability. The review focuses on the contributions ofkey sectors to urban environmental improvements, inparticular on those belonging to the InfrastructureVice-Presidency, and on how projects are contributing toachievement of the Millennium Development Goals. It alsohighlights some of the apparent gaps in current Bank lendingin regional, spatial, and thematic terms and argues for amore comprehensive and holistic approach to urbanenvironmental priorities, which could lead tobetter-integrated investments. The Bank corporate strategyon urban development (World Bank 2000a) addresses the urbanenvironment as part of enhancing urban livability. Thecorporate environment strategy (World Bank 2001b) states itsimportance through its goals of improving the quality oflife, improving the quality of growth, and protecting thequality of regional and global commons.
