The Government of Burkina Faso (GoBF)has indicated that it wishes to relocate the currentinternational airport of Ouagadougou, which lies close tothe centre of the capital, to an alternative site at Donsin,35 km northwest of the city. This report briefly describesthe economy of Burkina Faso within which the airportoperates, the current infrastructure of the existing airportand examines the reasons why the GoBF believes that it isinadequate to meet the projected future demand for aviationservices. It also considers the proposed relocation of theexisting airport within the context of the Government soverall policy for the strategic development of thecountry s transport infrastructure and tourism; the currentinstitutional and regulatory structure of civil aviation inBurkina Faso and the division of responsibilities betweenkey statutory and supra-national bodies; the urbandevelopment plan for the city of Ouagadougou and the area ofGrand Ouaga; and the Government s broader policy objectivesrelating to economic reform, decentralization and social development.
