【 摘 要 】
Around the world, countries are becomingurbanized at an astonishing pace. As countries developeconomically, their economies shift from mainly rural andagrarian to increasingly urban and nonagricultural. Thisrural-urban transformation presents both opportunities andchallenges for development. When managed effectively, thetransformation spurs growth and reduces poverty. Whenmanaged poorly, however, the process can result in starkwelfare disparities, the marginalization of entire regions, and poorly functioning cities that fail to realize thepotential gains from agglomeration economies. This bookinvestigates the rural-urban transformation underway inSub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, emphasizing the influenceof country conditions as well as the potential of goodpolicies to minimize disparities and ensure that everyoneshares in the benefits of urbanization. The first part ofthis book investigates urbanization and rural-urban welfareinequalities on three geographic scales global, national, and local featuring countries and cities in Sub-SaharanAfrica on the national and local levels. The second part ofthe book sheds light on the texture of transformation infive countries in South Asia, each at a different stage inthe process: Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
