This report reviews the role that safetynets have played in Tanzania and explores options on howthey can contribute in accelerating poverty reduction inTanzania, focusing on mechanisms for giving transfers to thepoor. The report shows that given the large numbers of poorin Tanzania and the country s limited resources, it isessential that safety net interventions be well-targeted andefficiently organized. Significant amounts of money arealready being spent on transfer programs in Tanzania, buttheir impact has been limited. The report recommends thatfor Tanzania, a single intervention will not be enough toeffectively tackle extreme poverty but a combination ofdifferent type of cash transfer options is more likely tomake a difference in the strategy to reduce extreme povertyand food insecurity.
