This evaluation assesses knowledge-basedactivities in nine country programs selected from 48knowledge-intensive programs supported by the Bank Group. Itidentifies the factors in the success or failure of thoseactivities as they contribute to policy making ordevelopment outcomes. It also identifies areas of strengthfor the Bank Group as well as areas of weakness or risk. Theevaluation findings are therefore relevant to current BankGroup efforts to strengthen the contribution of knowledge todevelopment. In addition, the evaluation assessedInternational Finance Corporation (IFC) advisory servicesfor their synergy with the Bank's analytical andadvisory activities. The main objective of the evaluation isto learn lessons from practices in a focus group ofhigh-income and upper-middle-income countries that haveknowledge based programs with the Bank Group. This report isorganized in five chapters as follows: chapter one isintroduction. Chapter two reviews the relevance andstrategic positioning of the World Bank in knowledge-basedpartnerships. Chapter three reviews the technical quality ofthe knowledge services delivered. Chapter four evaluates theresults of the knowledge activities and theirsustainability, as well as the synergy between World Bankknowledge services and IFC advisory services in promotingprivate and financial sector development. Chapter five drawsconclusions and discusses the lessons learned from the evaluation.
